Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could continue her passion for literature and theatre during the day. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay had a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to make use of the arts to find a way of expressing herself. DuVernay who was born alongside her extended family at Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights marches that were historic through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English along with African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to sit at the home of one of the members of the jury, and then take a look at their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was assigned, she decided to pursue a career in the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right after graduating from college as the junior publicist for a small studio. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
